If you want to look at another set of successful roguelike games, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon comes to mind, which is far more forgiving than Dungeons of Dredmor. A lot more people play it, including people who would get rather pissed off by dying as much as they would if they might meet a bronze collosus right after they start off with barely any useful gear.
